The Resident Evil franchise is no stranger to placing plenty of Easter eggs and hidden references across the series, with the latest and greatest Resident Evil Requiem being no exception to the rule. While you might have spotted some of the more glaring callbacks to previous entries already, Requiem still has more than a few subtle references that you could have entirely missed on your first playthrough.
Whether spotted by eagle-eyed players or found using roundabout gameplay techniques, it’s clear that the record-breaking development time for Resident Evil Requiem has allowed the developers at Capcom to squeeze in even more details than usual for long-time fans of the series.
Grill Thirteen Somehow Managed To Make A Return
Just How Many Restaurants Have There Been
Being one of the smaller background details at the start of Resident Evil Requiem, you’d be forgiven for overlooking that one of the restaurants named Grill Fourteen, which you pass by as Grace, is a direct reference to a similar one from Resident Evil 3.
The advertisements for Dulvey Beer are also a reference to the same brand that makes an appearance in Resident Evil 7.
With the original Grill Thirteen having been destroyed both during the Raccoon City incident and the nuclear detonation that followed, it seems like its creators were able to stay afloat and rebuild a new store after its original annihilation, although it raises the question of just how many restaurants the owners have gone through at this point if the naming scheme has continued this whole time.
Resident Evil Requiem’s Wine Bottles Are From Castle Dimitrescu
Lady Dimitrescu’s Castle Decor Makes A Lot More Sense Now
Once you’ve gotten to the Care Center Courtyard in Resident Evil Requiem, you’ll eventually come across an interactive wine bottle in the VIP Suite with a fairly straightforward puzzle attached. While being able to pick up the bottle makes it a little easier to spot, you’d be forgiven for completely overlooking the actual name on the bottle, which originates from Resident Evil Village.
With the bottle including the text “Maiden’s Blood: Bottled at Castle Dimitrescu, Dealu Mare“, it’s clearly a direct nod to the origin of the bottle itself. This offers an additional connection between both games and Umbrella Corporation, while also helping understand just how Dimitrescu was able to afford such a lavish Castle in RE Village.
Someone At The RPD Was A Massive Capcom Fan
While more of a testament to the long-lived history of Capcom itself as opposed to the Resident Evil series, a hidden puzzle in Requiem will allow you to uncover a secret stash of iconic video games from the studio. In order to find the locker in the first place, you’ll need to go through a secret scavenger hunt set up by Barry years prior to the events of the Raccoon City incident.
Waiting a few seconds after looting Wesker’s desk in the RPD will also grant you a book number that you can search for in the library, which then drops a familiar photo of “Rising Rookie Rebecca” that managed to survive all these years later.
Once you’ve found and followed the first two clues left behind by Barry, you’ll eventually find a key that opens up the locker filled with CDs and console accessories that offer a blast of nostalgia. In addition to the decorations, you’ll also get two tickets to the Raccoon City Zoo from Resident Evil Outbreak and a S.T.A.R.S. weapon charm.
Grace Can Find A Braille Version Of The Book Of Shadows
Requiem Has A Suspicious Amount Of Winters Family References
Being another one of Requiem‘s hardest to spot Easter eggs, some fans like Apodecte on Reddit were able to translate the braille text from the book that Emily reads during Grace’s first introduction, which turned out to be a line from the ‘Village of Shadows’ seen at the start of Resident Evil Village.
Although some fans were quick to say that it was likely just a reused asset from the previous game, the braille edition was made from scratch as opposed to being a reused asset. This could offer a potential connection between Emily and Village‘s Rose in the future.
Grace’s Lockpicking Achievement Is A Heartwarming Throwback
The Apple Doesn’t Fall Far From The Tree
After using a lockpick to open one of the many secure drawers scattered across Requiem as Grace, you’ll unlock the achievement ‘Like Mother, Like Daughter’, a direct reference to Grace’s mother, Alyssa Ahshcroft and her role in Resident Evil Outbreak.
While it’s an easily missable trophy in the wide array of Requiem‘s many achievements, the bittersweet reference is a more subtle way of showing just how much Grace takes after her own mother. Alyssa’s personal item in Resident Evil Outbreak was the Picking Tool that can be used for unlocking doors, lockers, and more scattered throughout the survival horror game.
Leon’s License Plate Isn’t A Random Series Of Numbers
A Shockingly Simple Easter Egg From Capcom’s Strangest Crossover
While Leon’s luxurious Porsche has been subject to plenty of jokes and mods since the release of Resident Evil Requiem, one detail that is incredibly easy to overlook is what the license plate numbers on the crossover vehicle actually stand for.
Even if the meaning behind the ‘ND’ text is still up for debate, the 9 6 4 2 code on the license plate has been identified as representing each game Leon S. Kennedy stars in through descending order, from Resident Evil Requiem all the way to the original Resident Evil 2. Although this detail was spotted in the trailers leading up to release, it’s still an Easter egg that’s incredibly easy to overlook without knowing beforehand.
The Bar Lounge In Rhodes Hill Hides A Hidden Anagram
The First Official Hint At Resident Evil’s Code Veronica Remake
Unlike Lady Dimitrescu’s wine bottle found much later on in the story, one of the very first areas you’ll come across in Requiem while playing as Grace provides a massive hint towards Resident Evil‘s next remake. Spotted by several players, like TheSphereHunter on X, a whiskey bottle titled ‘AVERNICO’ has been heavily speculated to be an anagram for ‘VERONICA’.
Given that Resident Evil: Code Veronica is currently rumored to be the next major remake project in development for the series, the anagram could be one of the first official acknowledgments of the project by Capcom, which would be far from the first time the series has included references to upcoming projects as subtle Easter eggs.
A Familiar Survivor Can Be Found In The RPD’s Ruins
Raising The Question Of How Durable Artificial Meat Can Be
While you might be alarmed by hearing some strange sounds while exploring the ruins of the RPD like Leon, looking carefully at certain segments of the destroyed walls will reveal the familiar sight of the Tofu Survivor from the original Resident Evil 2. Even if the sentient block of Tofu isn’t playable this time around, it’s still a surprisingly detailed callback that can be missed if you’re not paying attention to your surroundings.
On top of returning mechanics like Ink Ribbons, the Tofu Survivor is an excellent way to pay homage to the roots of the series. Its origins as a joke character during Resident Evil 2‘s development have become an unforgettable part of the series’ history after being introduced through officially playable game modes.
Adding More Fuel For The Resident Evil Remake Rumors
Although this Easter egg is one of the more convoluted details hidden in Resident Evil Requiem, it’s hard to argue that it isn’t at least a reference to some of the past entries in the series. Found in the Asylum section, where you play as Emily, you can come across several toys that represent several iconic moments from the earliest games in the series.
Including the four members of the S.T.A.R.S. team entering Spencer Mansion in Resident Evil 1 and the train from Resident Evil 0, some fans have speculated that the Easter egg could be another hint that backs up the existence of the remakes for both games, which have both been rumored to be in development for some time now.
Grace Can Be Found Reading About Resident Evil 7’s Baker Family
Requiem’s Intro Hides An Easter Egg Just Out Of Sight
Being one of the very few references that you definitely would have missed yourself, some players like KnyH_82 on Reddit experimenting with freecams were able to spot a surprisingly detailed Easter egg on Grace’s laptop during Requiem‘s introduction. While fans like aLegionOfDavids were quick to make jokes about Grace being a “conspiracy sub Redditor,” the content itself hides a way more interesting detail.
On the screen itself, Grace can be seen browsing a Reddit page discussing the Baker family incident from Resident Evil 7, which has several responses speculating on what actually happened to the family and the Sheriff’s disappearances. While Resident Evil Requiem has more than a few references to Ethan’s outings in the series, this reference, entirely hidden out of sight from players, is one of the most direct acknowledgments of the previous games’ events.
