Traffic managers, freight agents, customs and cargo maneuverers reported that once again there is a traffic jam at the Port of Manzanillo.

They indicated that more than 17 ships with cargo and containers with goods and products from Asia have not been able to be unloaded due to poor management by the Administration of the National Port System (Asipona).

“As of October 17, 2024, the port has 14 ships at anchor (waiting at sea that have not been unloaded), 10 of which are general cargo and 4 are containers,” reported those in charge of unloading the goods from Asia that are distributed in the Mexican market.

Among the stranded vessels are the Cebu Island v65, Texas Harmony v1, Carmel v54, BBC Vesuvius, Genco Freedom, Tymfi, Zhong Chang, Gisheng, Norse Oshima V1, Guan Fu and Aloni.

General cargo at the port of Manzanillo, the second most relevant segment after containers, shows a constant decline, employees stated.

Since 2020, the productivity of the Manzanillo port has been falling with a notable decline in the last 10 months, measured by tons discharged per day, they stated.

They pointed out that the cargo stay time went from 48 to 168 hours per vessel, which reduced the dynamic capacity of the port from 120 thousand to 30 thousand tons per month.

They warned that all this has negatively increased port and logistics costs for the supply chain, especially affecting general cargo and container ships.

In 2023, the Port of Manzanillo moved more than 2 million 403 thousand 419 tons of import and export merchandise.

Until September 2024, only one million 047 thousand tons were registered, which makes it unlikely to reach the previous figures due to the operational crisis caused by Asipona managers with ineffective rules, they stated.

“Manzanillo continues to face an unprecedented crisis due to the decisions of Asipona, which has paralyzed its operations, generating an unprecedented accumulation of anchored vessels,” they said.

“Meanwhile, that administration has continued without correcting the situation, permanently denying the reality of the facts,” they added.

They assured that the million-dollar losses and damages remain unrecognized, making the intervention of the Secretary of the Navy, Raymundo Pedro Morales Ángeles, inevitable.
