The attorney general of Mexico City, Bertha Alcalde Luján, assured that 18 people, including a teenager, of the 29 captured in flagrante delicto for violent acts during the ‘Generation Z’ march, were already arrested for various crimes last Saturday at the doors of the National Palace.

“The 18 people detained before the Public Ministry are referred (formally captured) for various crimes. In very particular cases for attempted homicide, resistance by individuals and robbery. And in the other cases for injuries of different degrees,” said Mayor Luján during a press conference.

The head of the agency also explained that the other ten people who were sent to the Public Ministry, “although it was identified that they did participate in the attacks based on medical opinions,” it was determined that said attacks “are not classified as a crime, but rather are behaviors that constitute civic offenses.”

Regarding the reported incidents, he noted that they include attacks against 84 police officers and four protesters, as well as “acts of robbery and damage to an establishment and a vehicle.”

He explained that in “all cases, videos and a specific analysis are being collected to prove responsibilities, both of individuals and police, for the recorded attacks.”

Police investigated for abuses

On the other hand, the Secretary of Citizen Security of Mexico City (SSC-CDMX), Pablo Vázquez, reported that 18 police officers are being investigated for “possible excessive use of force.”

In seven of the 18 investigations, “including cases of alleged attacks on members of the press,” the personnel involved “will be temporarily suspended” until the investigations are concluded, Vázquez explained.

In addition, he stressed that “he will not tolerate any act contrary to the police action protocols, as well as the principles” that govern them as an institution.

The head of the SSC-CDMX updated the figures of the effects on the police force: 60 police officers were injured and treated at the scene; Another 40 were transferred to hospitals for evaluation, of which 26 have already been discharged and 11 are receiving specialized care for injuries that, although some are serious, are not life-threatening.

The march of the self-proclaimed ‘Generation Z’ had nearly 20,000 attendees and began peacefully at the Angel of Independence in the capital and ended in a confrontation between police and a group identified as “the black block” at the gates of the National Palace on November 15.
