A24‘s returning comedy is keeping firm with a rare achievement on Rotten Tomatoes.

The production company has established itself as a major player in the film space, with 21 wins at the Academy Awards. It hopes to keep the streak going at this year’s ceremony, with Marty Supreme poised for a strong showing. But what is somewhat less known is that A24 also has a dedicated television arm, behind such hits as HBO’s Euphoria and the Netflix breakout Beef.

The company’s output also includes Dreaming Whilst Black, a co-production with the BBC, which returned for its second season on Showtime and Paramount+ in mid-February. It currently holds a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with five positive reviews, and gets the rare achievement of maintaining its perfect 100% score from one season to the next. The first season consists of six episodes and has a perfect score based on 18 reviews.

Written by Ali Hughes and Adjani Salmon, Dreaming Whilst Black centers on Kwabena (portrayed by Salmon), an aspiring filmmaker trapped in a dead-end recruitment job. Determined to break out, he begins pursuing his ambition of creating a television series. As he moves closer to that goal, he is forced to navigate mounting pressures involving money, relationships, and his own grip on reality.

With a cast that includes Dani Moseley, Jo Martin, Demmy Ladipo, Rachel Adedeji, Babirye Bukilwa, Martina Laird, and Roger Griffiths, the premise evolved from a web series to television. It was eventually picked up by A24, airing on Showtime early in the U.S. and BBC Three in the UK. Dreaming Whilst Black season 2 is picking up after an exceptionally strong debut that earned recognition at the top awards.

Salmon was shortlisted for the BAFTA Breakthrough Award in November 2023, and several critics named Dreaming Whilst Black among the best shows of the year. Reviews have praised the A24 production for being a hilarious, occasionally cringeworthy comedy that boasts a charming lead performance from Salmon. The second installment has so far been similarly lauded by critics.

As part of ScreenRant‘s Dreaming Whilst Black interviews, the producing team spoke openly about what it was like to bring such a personal narrative to a large audience. Hopefully, with continued praise, this showbiz satire can grow its viewership by gaining a bigger spotlight and ultimately find its way to a renewal for a much-deserved season 3 renewal.
