The National Seismological Service (SSN) has registered 420 aftershocks after the 6.5 magnitude earthquake that occurred during the morning with its epicenter in Guerrero, which according to authorities has not left major damage.

“Until 12:00 p.m., 420 aftershocks have been recorded, the largest being 4.7,” the SSN stated.

The earthquake was reported by the institution at 07:58 hours 4 kilometers southwest of San Marcos, Guerrero, and activated the seismic alert in several states of the country.

According to municipal, state and National Civil Protection Coordination (CNPC) reports, the earthquake was felt in Guerrero, Oaxaca, Veracruz, Morelos, Puebla, Jalisco, Tabasco, Colima and Hidalgo, although with slight damage.

The CNPC pointed out that the earthquake was strongly felt in Guerrero, where after the event the care and evaluation protocols were immediately activated in the 85 municipalities of the entity “no injuries or fatalities were reported, only attention due to a nervous breakdown,” it stated.

The earthquake occurred just when President Claudia Sheinbaum was giving her morning press conference, so she had to preventively leave the National Palace facilities along with reporters and government workers.

The head of Government of Mexico City, Clara Brugada, reported that after activating the action protocol for the earthquake, there is currently a report of “12 injured people; the fall of 5 poles and 4 trees; as well as 18 complaints due to lack of electricity supply in different neighborhoods.”

Likewise, he said that two structures are being evaluated for risk of collapse, and 34 buildings and five houses are being inspected preventively.

Meanwhile, the Benito Juárez mayor’s office of the Mexican capital reported the death of a 60-year-old man, who died while evacuating the building where he lived.

The earthquake recorded this Friday recalls that of September 19, 1985, when the most destructive earthquake in the country’s history was recorded, with a magnitude of 8.1, with an epicenter in the Pacific Ocean, on the coast of the state of Michoacán, and effects in the center, south and west of the country, with an official figure of 3,192 deaths, although organizations estimate that in reality there were more than 20,000 due to irregularities in the count.

While on September 19, 2017, a 7.7 magnitude earthquake with its epicenter in the states of Puebla and Morelos, in the center of the country, left 370 dead and more than 7,000 injured, with the majority of deaths in Mexico City, which accounted for 228.
