The World Teacher Report estimates that 44 million primary and secondary teachers are needed worldwide to meet the objective of a quality education by 2030 and this shortage affects all types of countries, regardless of their per capita income, as indicated by the analysis presented on Tuesday in Madrid.

The study prepared by UNESCO, the SM Foundation and Education 2030 alerts that seven out of ten teachers are needed in secondary education, and more than half to replace classmates who leave the profession.

Primary abandonment rates in all European countries have almost doubled.

China and Korea who most meet teaching

Only a few countries are in the process of reaching the number of teachers necessary for 2030, around 78 countries in 197 could have sufficient teachers in primary education. The East Asia countries (China and Korea) would be headed while in secondary education only 30 countries would meet the objectives of hiring teachers.

In Europe and North America, only 11 countries in 44 would have enough teachers in five years, the rest will need 4.8 million teachers.

Latin America and the Caribbean need 3.2 million teachers to achieve universal education in 2030.

Proposals to retain the teacher

“To retain teachers and keep them motivated throughout their professional life, attractive professional careers are essential with equitable access to professional development,” says the report that recommends paying “special attention” to the reception of new teachers and mentoring in their early years.

Taking care of the social welfare of teachers, promoting the culture of collaboration so that they do not feel alone and have a support network, as well as design a career in which they see challenges and promotions, are key to the director of the SM Foundation, Mayte Ortiz.

Competitive wages, include extras and compensation so that the most qualified teachers attend in more conflicting centers or in rural areas, as well as encourage the teacher who assumes leadership tasks, are other proposals.
