Los Angeles, (EFE) .- President Donald Trump announced that 50% tariffs imposed on copper imports will enter into force on August 1.

“Announced a 50% tariff on copper, in force as of August 1, 2025, after receiving a rigorous national security evaluation,” said the president in his social social network.

On Tuesday he informed about the imposition of a 50% tax on this mineral and said it contemplates another of up to 200% for pharmaceutical products if their manufacturers are not installed in the United States.

This new tariff follows the similar ones already applied to steel and aluminum.

“Why our fools (and dreamy!)” Leaders “decimated this important industry? This 50% tariff will reverse the inconsiderate and stupidity of the Biden administration. The United States will build a dominant copper industry again. This is, after all, our golden age!” The president added.

The Trump administration had pointed out months ago they were preparing copper tariffs, but until Tuesday he had not given details.

The announcement comes a day before the initial term granted to commercial partners is fulfilled to set new levies that replaced those considered reciprocal tariffs.

Last year, the United States imported almost half of the copper it consumed, according to the United States Geological Service, and most of those shipments came from Chile and Canada.
