To say that it has been a difficult year for American universities would be to fall short. During the last eight months, President Donald Trump, his administration and the Republicans of Congress have fought a financial and cultural war against higher education: freezing research funds, penalizing diversity efforts on campus, restricting the flow of foreign students, increasing taxes on some university endowments and braking the generosity of student loan programs. However, American universities continue to offer a top -level university education. This year, the Massachusetts Technological Institute (MIT) recovers first place in the Forbes list of the best universities in the United States, far exceeding the 14 metrics we use to determine which 500 institutions offer the best educational, financial and professional results for all students.

Among their most prominent figures: graduates earn an average salary of $ 110,200 only three years after graduating and almost all students (99.8 %) return to MIT after their first year. Also in our Top 10: Williams College, the “Little Ivy” of Massachusetts (No. 7), the Johns Hopkins University, a reference in research, (n. ° 8) and the University of California-Berkeley, a public university highlighted for centuries (No. 5).

Five of the eight universities of the Ivy League are among the 10 best and all reached the top 20. The cost and suitability of a university for the student (both academically and academically) should continue to be the main factors when families consider the university. However, the current crisis could also affect the experience of university students, university counselors warn. Fortunately, they have also shared with Forbes tips to navigate the university search process in the middle of this chaos.

The 500 institutions that appear below are classified exclusively according to the results of their undergraduate students, but it should be noted that American postgraduate education is prepared for a deep transformation, since Congress limits the amount of loans for postgraduate students and Trump administration reduces research spending and student visas. Forbes identified 25 particularly vulnerable private universities. As always, Forbes has sought far beyond the Ivy League to identify the best universities. Earlier this year, we publish our second annual New IVIES list, which recognizes 10 public and 10 private universities that stand out among employers. If you are looking for a public university with a lot of activity, take a look at the 25 best in the US, and if you prefer a small campus, we have included 50 of the best universities with less than 4000 undergraduate students.

We have also identified the 25 universities (both public and private) that offer the best return on investment and 25 private universities that reduce their prices by half or more with generous financial aid.
