Sarah J. Maas, the fan-appointed Queen of romantasy, has delivered amazing news as she will be returning to her book series A Court of Thorns and Roses, but not in the way you think.
First published in 2015, the book series dominated and became a massive success, selling well over 13 million copies and firmly establishing Maas in the romance/fantasy world. The first book, A Court of Thorns and Roses, is almost like a Beauty and the Beast retelling following Feyre Archeron, who is forced into the magical land of Prythian after killing a faerie. However, when complicated feelings arise, she must battle an ancient evil threatening the realm.
The author Maas appeared on Alex Cooper’s Call Her Daddy podcast and revealed some exciting news for fans of the fantasy series, that she will be releasing two more novels in her ACOTAR series. On the podcast, Maas addressed the canceled Hulu series, which has been a massive point of contention for the author and fans of the book series longing to see their beloved faeries come to life. The series was reported to be canceled in 2024, but Maas has made it clear that she “wants to see everything adapted” the way she envisions it:
“I have the rights back to everything now. Getting the rights back to all my things has been a big part of my journey in recent years that maybe at some point soon I will talk more about, but right now my focus is on books, and it’s been a little while since you guys have had something, so I’m focusing on that.
I don’t ever want to hear like, ‘Oh, we need to change this to appeal to XYZ’s demographic.’ I’m like, ‘No, that’s not how you make art. That’s not how I create my stories.’ So when I do it, it’s gonna be me, and I will dedicate everything that I have to making it right. But I’ll be in there, looking at all the design. But also like, ‘What does it sound like?’ because music plays such a big part. The music is gonna have to be a huge project.”
Maas is also the author of two other series, Crescent City and Throne of Glass, which have been major successes in their own right, and Crescent City even had some crossover moments with the ACOTAR universe. The author also revealed she will be releasing books six and seven of the ACOTAR novel series on October 27, 2026, and January 12, 2027. However, she remained very tight-lipped on what these books could entail, as Crescent City‘s events could throw everything into chaos.
It’s unclear who will take the helm to develop a series adaptation, but with Hulu canceling its plans, it’s only a matter of time before one of the big streaming giants takes the reins. It was reported that Hulu canceled the adaptation due to the massive budget required to convert the novel to the screen, but it was also reported that creative differences and demands led to Hulu stepping away from the project entirely.
Maas has ensured she will remain true to “what the fans want to see,” so it’s only a matter of time before fans can get a true and loyal adaptation of their favorite book series, A Court of Thorns and Roses.
