Freakier Friday has been a massive hit on streaming since it arrived on Disney+. The long-awaited Freaky Friday legacy sequel was a moderate success at the box office, at a time when comedies can barely make a splash in theaters, and that success has only continued since fans have been able to watch it at home.
With a much more elaborate body swap incorporating four different bodies, Freakier Friday certainly lives up to its title. In the first movie, a mother and daughter played by Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan switched bodies. But in the second one, they both switch places with a couple of Gen Z kids: Lohan’s daughter and soon-to-be stepdaughter.
How Freakier Friday Compares To The Original
By continuing the story and rehashing the premise, Freakier Friday openly invites comparisons to the original film. It’s much more complicated, for starters. In the first one, you just have to remember that Tess is Anna and vice versa. But in the sequel, you have to keep track of Tess, Anna, Anna’s daughter Harper, and Anna’s fiancé’s daughter Lily.
Anna switches bodies with Harper and Tess switches bodies with Lily. It’s endless fun to watch Curtis and Lohan playing a couple of teenagers in the bodies of women of a certain age. Their on-screen chemistry hasn’t skipped a beat, and this new conceit is a goldmine of intergenerational comedy.
Ultimately, Freakier Friday isn’t quite as funny as its predecessor — the first movie is a laugh riot, whereas this one is more of a smattering of light chuckles — but it is just as feel-good. Its jokes don’t always land, but it’s just as effective at uplifting the audience. You’ll come out of this movie with a smile on your face and a warmth in your heart, just like the first one.
Will There Be Another Freaky Friday?
Following the current title formula, there’s a chance that we could get a third installment called Freakiest Friday in another couple of decades. But is Disney planning on doing another one? The Mouse House has yet to officially greenlight a threequel, but the creatives involved have been talking up ideas for a third film.
Director Nisha Ganatra has said that Freakiest Friday would involve a six-way body swap to up the ante even further from the second one. She wants to see Manny Jacinto and Chad Michael Murray switch bodies. Freakier Friday did as well as the first one, so a third movie should be a no-brainer.
