The former Lady of Mexico, Beatriz Gutiérrez Müller, initiated a procedure to obtain Spanish nationality through the Democratic Memory Law, approved in 2022, according to a note from the ABC International website.
Gutiérrez Müller, granddaughter of Catalans and Castilians, can maintain her Mexican citizenship, since there is no dual nationality treaty that forces her to renounce her passport.
The writer and academic, born in 1969 in Mexico City, is known for her career in Ibero -American Letters, with a doctorate in literary theory.

His decision has generated surprise, especially for his role in the diplomatic crisis between Mexico and Spain. In 2019, he promoted a letter demanding that the Spanish crown apologize for the crimes of the conquest, a claim that climbed tensions and took López Obrador to decree a symbolic “pause” in bilateral relations in 2022.
The procedure, which could culminate in 25 months, coincides with rumors on possible academic activities by Gutiérrez Müller in Europe.
In Mexico, its decision is interpreted as a gesture that could facilitate reconciliation with Spain, after the cooling of relations that continued under President Claudia Sheinbaum, who excluded the Spanish Royal Family from his inauguration in October 2024.
