Accompaniment in favor of sovereignty

In negotiations between Mexico and the United States, pragmatism has been the most valuable currency, based on the recognition of Mexico’s weight in the US economy and the use of this interdependence as a shield.

We are the first commercial partner of the northern neighbor, with an exchange only last January of 69.6 billion dollars, of which 27.9 were exports and 41.7 imports, according to data from the United States Census office.

Putting this market size with hegemonic claims supported by the imposition of tariffs represented even attempt against the economy, not only that of commercial partners.

For the United States, manufactured products in Mexico are not only imports, they are part of a supply chain initiated in Detroit and finished in central Mexico.

This reality gave President Claudia Sheinbaum elements against Donald Trump to sit as equal to a negotiation that allowed the tariffs to be postponed to July 2. Other substantive influence factors are, without a doubt, the results in the fight against fentanyl – decrease in the volumes seized in that country, as well as the sending of 29 drug traffickers – and the reinforcement of the northern border with 10 thousand elements of the National Guard.

A powerful letter has been in the accompaniment of the private sector regarding the defense of political, economic, social and commercial sovereignty. There is full understanding about the needs of the country and macroeconomic advances.

The image of the Sheinbaum meeting and its cabinet with representatives of the private initiative, after the call with President Trump last week, is illustrative in terms of the confidence and defense of sovereignty. As is the support of Mexico City by the Head of Government, Clara Brugada.

Francisco Cárdenas, president of the CCE, recognizes the president’s leadership to protect the interests of Mexico. The leader of the bankers, Julio Carranza, applauds mutual trust and joint work.

The country reveals strength, political, social and macroeconomic stability. “Essential part of an economic project based on financial discipline,” argues the general director of Grupo Financiero Banamex, Manuel Romo.

True, as the Turkish economist Dani Rodrik affirms in his “trilema of globalization”, you cannot have total sovereignty, economic integration and democracy without tensions. However, while Trump threatens tariffs, Sheinbaum has tools and central accompaniment to counteract.

Sovereignty is not defended only from the National Palace.
