A pair of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy actors react to the Paramount+ series ending with season 2. Created by Gaia Violo and executive produced by co-showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 1’s finale premiered on March 12. Filming of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 2 wrapped in late February in Toronto.
Variety reported that Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is ending with season 2 as the final season. The young adult Star Trek series was ‘divisive,’ but Variety cites Starfleet Academy‘s viewership as the reason why Paramount+ didn’t renew it for season 3: “The show failed to find a significant audience. Across its 10-episode first season, it has failed to rank on the Nielsen Top 10 streaming viewership charts.”
On Instagram, Karim Diané shared his feelings on Star Trek: Starfleet Academy ending with season 2, which was “really hard for me to say.” Diané plays Jay-Den Kraag, Star Trek’s first gay Klingon, and Karim spoke of how much he loves Starfleet Academy, excitedly calling season 2 “just season 1 turned all the way up.” See Karim’s post below:
Raoul Bhaneja, who plays the War College’s Chancellor Kelrec, also shared how “it’s hard not to feel a little sour” that Star Trek: Starfleet Academy isn’t getting a season 3. However, Bhaneja described season 2 as “super fun,” and he paid homage to the cast and crew as he looks forward to fans seeing how the characters grow and change in the second season. Watch Raoul’s post below:
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 2 is in post-production, and the latter 10 episodes of the series are expected to premiere in early 2027 on Paramount+. However, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy co-showrunner Noga Landau hinted that season 2 ends on a cliffhanger, which could leave Starfleet Academy‘s story frustratingly open-ended.
It’s possible that Paramount+ could grant Star Trek: Starfleet Academy additional filming to tie up the series’ loose ends with a coda, which is what happened when Star Trek: Discovery was abruptly canceled with season 5. However, there has been no indication thus far that Starfleet Academy will be allowed to film an epilogue of its own.
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy officially joins Star Trek: Strange New Worlds as the final two Star Trek on Paramount+ shows expected to end in 2027. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ fifth and final season (consisting of only 6 episodes) wrapped filming in Toronto in December 2025. Strange New Worlds seasons 4 and 5 are awaiting Paramount+ premiere dates.
With Star Trek: Starfleet Academy now ending with season 2, Star Trek’s TV franchise on Paramount+ is at a pivot point with no new series in production or greenlit. In the coming days, other Star Trek: Starfleet Academy cast members may take to social media to share their feelings about their college journey ending in sophomore year.
