Mexico and the US announced on Wednesday the establishment of a “high -level group” to monitor their bilateral security coordination, focused on combating drug trafficking and illegal immigration.

The announcement was made by Mexican Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente, before the joint press conference with his American counterpart, Marco Rubio, who is visiting Mexico.

“The two governments have established a high -level implementation group that will meet regularly to monitor mutual commitments and actions taken within their own countries,” said De la Fuente, who read a joint statement at the start of the appearance, held at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

As agreed, the group will monitor “measures to counteract posters, strengthen border security, eliminate clandestine border tunnels, address illicit financial flows, improve collaboration to prevent fuel theft, increase inspections, investigations and judicial processes to stop the flow of drugs and weapons”.

The Mexican Chancellor stressed that this bilateral cooperation is based “on the principles of reciprocity, respect for territorial sovereignty and integrity, shared and differentiated responsibility, as well as on mutual trust.”

The Government of Claudia Sheinbaum has been highlighting these four principles agreed in February, after this summer the US president, Donald Trump, gave order to the army of fighting groups linked to drug trafficking, unleashing speculations about possible military interventions on Mexican soil.

The source insisted today that the goal is to “work together to dismantle transnational organized crime through reinforced cooperation between our respective national security institutions, security forces and judicial authorities.”

He also said that cooperation to “attend the illegal movement of people through the border” will strengthen security along “the shared border”, in addition to stopping “the traffic of fentanyl and other illicit drugs”, as well as the trafficking of weapons.

Rubio’s visit, who met Sheinbaum today at the National Palace, occurs in full Washington offensive against drug trafficking at the transnational level.
