Strong bursts of gunshots were heard this Monday night around the Miraflores Palace, the headquarters of the Venezuelan Executive, according to various witnesses told EFE.

At the moment, no authority has commented on the incident.

Videos of the gunshots were immediately circulated on social media, while witnesses told EFE that numerous motorcyclists could be heard passing by in the surrounding area.

Unconfirmed versions from social media users reported the possible presence of drones in the vicinity of the presidential headquarters.

The incident took place hours after Chavista Delcy Rodríguez was sworn in as interim president of the country following the capture last Saturday of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, during a US military operation in Caracas and three neighboring states.

Rodríguez, sworn in by her brother, the president of the National Assembly (AN, Parliament), the Chavista Jorge Rodríguez, opened this Monday a new political chapter for Chavismo in its almost 26-year history.

The official became, by order of the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ), the first woman in the history of Venezuela to head the Executive two days after the capture of Maduro, who today appeared with his wife before a federal court in New York, before which they pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Rodríguez assured, during the swearing-in ceremony, that in these “terrible hours of threats against stability” he will not rest “not even a minute to guarantee peace.”
