(Reuters) – A federal judge dismissed on Wednesday a proposed collective claim against Amazon for his decision to include commercials in his prime video service, unless subscribers paid an additional monthly rate of $ 2.99 to avoid them.

The subscribers, who paid $ 139 a year for Prime Video, argued that Amazon had led them to believe that the service would remain free of advertisements. They affirmed that the inclusion of commercials amounted to an increase in price that violated its subscription contracts and the consumer protection laws of the state of Washington.

However, the US district judge, Barbara Jacobs Rothstein, based in Seattle, concluded that the ads constituted a “modification of benefits” specifically planned and authorized by both Amazon and the subscribers. The change entered into force in January 2024.

The subscriber lawyers did not immediately respond to the requests for comments.
