The ambassador, Ken Salazar, assured this Friday that the trade relationship between Mexico and the United States is “protected” by the USMCA, despite the uncertainty due to the recent victory of Donald Trump and his threat to impose tariffs.
The ambassador was in Nuevo León to sign a state agreement and also held a private meeting with the business sector.
“About the USMCA and tariffs, well look what I spoke to businessmen, what I have said here for three years, is that we have a relationship based on law, the law is an international law, approved by the presidents and the Congresses of the three nations and so this law is in force until 2036,” he commented.
Salazar added that the review of the North American treaty in 2026 will be to work on areas of opportunity and make improvements.
He acknowledged that in the rhetoric of the US Presidency campaigns, there may be much that is worrying, “but the way it should be treated is to make known what has been done so well with the USMCA.”
Specifically, the diplomat cited the case of Nuevo León’s commercial relationship with Texas, United States.

“The businessmen who are here in Monterrey have many companies and create many jobs in the United States. The supply chains that are linked, integrated more at this moment than at any time in all of history,” he said.
‘Security, the biggest challenge that Mexico has’
Salazar spoke about security in Mexico and said that it is one of the great challenges that President Claudia Sheinbaum herself has recognized.
“Look at security, in general, I think it is the biggest challenge that Mexico has at this moment. President Sheinbaum and her team recognize this, and with them we have been working on how to achieve better security for Mexico,” he explained.
He pointed out that on this issue it is up to the United States to support Mexico’s actions, but always with respect for the country’s sovereignty.
“The role of the United States must be to support what the Government of Mexico is doing, always with respect for sovereignty,” he stated.
