The maneuver, carried out by American flight 2246, from Boston, occurred around 8:20 in the morning of Tuesday, less than two hours before another plane that tried to land at the Midway airport in Chicago was forced to Ascend again to avoid another aircraft that crossed the track. Southwest reported that the 2504 flight of Omaha, Nebraska, landed safely “after the crew made a precautionary waiting turn to avoid a possible conflict with another aircraft that entered the track,” said a spokesman for the airline in a email. “The crew followed safety procedures and the flight landed without incident.”

So far, American Airlines has not responded to a request for comments on the waiting turn at Washington National Airport.
