The organization Amnesty International (AI) this Monday condemned the conviction for murder of journalist Miguel Ángel Beltrán, in Durango, the seventh case registered in 2025 in the country, one of the “deadliest” for the press.

AI expressed “deep regret” about the crime confirmed by the authorities this day, while expressing solidarity with Beltrán’s family, colleagues and friends.

“We demand from the Durango Prosecutor’s Office an exhaustive, impartial investigation that considers its journalistic work as a central line of investigation to guarantee truth, justice and reparation for damage,” AI stated, in a message on X.

In addition, the NGO warned that with this case, “there are already seven journalists murdered in Mexico in 2025, one of the deadliest countries to practice journalism,” according to the organization Reporters Without Borders (RSF).

The Durango Attorney General’s Office confirmed today the murder of the journalist, who had denounced the activities of organized crime in the area, amid the wave of violence that the country is experiencing.

AI’s statement joins that of the Inter-American Press Association (IAPA), which also urged the Mexican authorities to ensure that Beltrán’s murder “does not remain in impunity.”

Martha Ramos, president of the IAPA Committee on Freedom of the Press and Information, emphasized that “given the nature of Beltrán’s informative work, focused on matters of public interest and complaints related to organized crime,” his murder “could be linked to the exercise of his journalistic work.”

The body of Beltrán Martínez, 60, was found lifeless with signs of violence and a threatening message on the highway that connects Durango with Sinaloa, according to local media.

Beltrán was a contributor to the media Contexto and La Voz de Durango, where he mainly covered sports and police issues. He was also spokesperson for the National Union of Education Workers (SNTE) in Durango.

The communicator had a profile on the social network TikTok in which he disseminated information about Durango under the name ‘Capo’.

In 2025, seven journalists have been murdered in Mexico, according to data from the organization that defends freedom of expression and the right to information, Article 19.

Since the beginning of the century, the organization has recorded 174 murders and 31 disappearances of journalists in the republic.
