Amy Adams’ 8-Part HBO Thriller Series Is Perfect From Start To Finish

2018’s self-contained miniseries Sharp Objects only has eight episodes, but every one of them helps make the psychological thriller a rare masterpiece with no bad outings. Gillian Flynn became the first name in psychological thrillers when her bestselling third novel, Gone Girl, was adapted into an acclaimed blockbuster of the same name by director David Fincher.

However, fans of psychological thrillers were already likely familiar with Flynn thanks to her two earlier novels, 2009’s Dark Places and her 2006 debut, Sharp Objects. Sharp Objects was praised by no less than Stephen King himself upon its original release, with the author raving that the book was a disturbing and addictive read.

It is not hard to see why King loved the novel, since Sharp Objects’ twist ending is one of the most shocking revelations in psychological thriller history. However, this only made the prospect of adapting the taut, tense small-town thriller to screen even more daunting. Gone Girl was a huge hit, but 2009’s Dark Places movie adaptation was a critical and commercial failure.

Luckily, HBO’s 2018 adaptation of Sharp Objects was more than just a solid small-screen version of the book. Sharp Objects perfectly recaptured the sweaty intensity of the source material, a swampy slice of Southern Gothic that blends toxic family drama with gruesome slasher movie-style killings for an entirely unique murder mystery.

Amy Adams stars as Camille Preaker, a troubled journalist who returns to her hometown of Wind Gap, Missouri, to investigate a series of vicious killings. Unfortunately for Camille, who struggles with alcoholism and self-harm, staying in Wind Gap means staying with her creepy half-sister, Amma, and her smothering mother, Adora.

To say anymore would run the risk of ruining the show’s many plot twists, but suffice to say that Sharp Objects is an all-time great psychological thriller that never goes quite where the viewer expects. The show’s final twist is one of the most devastating revelations in the genre’s history, a startling reveal that will stick with viewers long after the show ends.

The critical acclaim that met Sharp Objects was well-earned, and it makes HBO’s upcoming small-screen adaptation of Flynn’s second novel compelling. In 2024, Variety announced that Flynn would serve as co-creator, writer, and co-showrunner on a TV version of Dark Places, which will see her once again team up with HBO to bring her novel to life as a miniseries.

This format clearly worked well for Sharp Objects, which was a huge hit with reviewers and viewers alike. After 2015’s disappointing movie version of Dark Places rushed through the novel’s complex story, a new adaptation from the creators of Sharp Objects can finally do justice to the book’s story.
