The Secretariat of the Navy (Semar) reported the death of Captain Adrián Omar del Ángel Zúñiga, in Puerto Peñasco, Sonora, during a real shooting practice exercise, which adds to the recent suicide of another agent in the Entity of Tamaulipas.

The Semar, through its X account, expressed its “condolences, absolute solidarity” and support “in accordance with the provisions of the law” to the loved ones of the element that served as captain in the port of the municipality of Manzanillo.

“The Secretariat of the Marina-Armada of Mexico expresses its regret for the death of one of its elements in Puerto Peñasco, Sonora, during a real shooting practice,” said the Semar in a brief publication.

On Monday, another Navy agent, Captain Abraham Jeremiah Pérez Ramírez, head of the Altamira Port Protection Unit, in Tamaulipas, was found lifeless within the port and according to Fuentes the case was confirmed as suicide.

Versions point to Pérez Ramírez as alleged involved in a fuel smuggling network or ‘fiscal huachicol’, which was uncovered over the weekend with the arrest of 14 sailors, customs officials and businessmen allegedly related to said network.

Among the detainees, the Vice Admiral Manuel Roberto Farías Laguna, political secretary of the former Secretariat of the Secretariat (Semar) between 2018 and 2024, Rafael Ojeda Durán, close to former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024)-, who was linked to a judicial process on Tuesday.

On Sunday, the head of the Secretariat of Citizen Security and Protection (SSPC) of Mexico, Omar García Harfuch, informed that the arrest warrants against three entrepreneurs, five navigats in active, one in retirement and five former customs officials were executed.

According to García Harfuch, the arrest of 14 people involved in fuel smuggling was the result of the confiscation last March of ten million liters in the state of Tamaulipas (Northeast).

President Claudia Sheinbaum said Tuesday that there is no certainty “that Captain Pérez Ramírez has been involved in the case, and, on Monday, he promised” zero impunity “in criminal acts.

In March, authorities seized 10 million liters of hydrocarbons in Tamaulipas, and then, at the end of July, they seized 1.8 million liters of illegal hydrocarbon and a property also in the same state.
