Apple TV‘s catalog includes a compelling 9-part crime drama that has the potential to become as big as Netflix’s Ozark in its upcoming season 2.
When it comes to crime thrillers, Apple TV seems to have a few limited options for viewers. As of now, its offerings in the genre are fairly limited. However, even among these limited offerings, almost all shows are remarkably consistent in quality. One of these shows is also set to return soon with its second installment and has been touted as the perfect replacement for Netflix’s Ozark.
While only time will tell whether it will become as popular as Netflix’s Ozark, it has already shown immense potential in season 1 and promises to only get better in its upcoming installment.
Apple TV’s Your Friends & Neighbors’ New Cast Addition Makes Its Season 2 More Exciting
Your Friends and Neighbors season 1 ended with a compelling cliffhanger in which Jon Hamm’s Andrew Cooper returned to being a suburban thief despite getting back everything he had lost. The cliffhanger revealed that the character was no longer stealing to sustain his old lifestyle or keep himself afloat. He was doing it because it gave his life a semblance of meaning and ambition that it previously lacked.
This development alone made the show’s season 2 more exciting, setting the stage for Cooper to double down on his life as a suburban thief. Although Your Friends and Neighbors is far less gritty than Breaking Bad, its season 1’s ending also sets up a darker descent into the criminal world for its main character. In season 2, it would be interesting to see how Hamm will embody these growing darker traits.
Interestingly, as Your Friends and Neighbors season 2‘s trailer confirms, it has also added James Marsden to its roster. He will portray a new addition to Andrew Cooper’s neighborhood and potentially threaten the Jon Hamm character’s stealing endeavors. Since both Hamm and Marsden are known for perfectly portraying morally complex characters, their dynamic could become one of the main drivers of season 2.
Apple TV had renewed the show for season 2 even before its first installment premiered. Even its season 3 has already been greenlit on the streaming service, highlighting how confident it is in its long-term success. This alone gives audiences a solid reason to check it out, as it not only hints that the show will get better with time but also establishes it will not be canceled too easily.
Your Friends & Neighbors Can Become As Big As Ozark
Unlike Ozark, Your Friends and Neighbors has a bright color palette and avoids taking itself too seriously. However, similar to the Netflix hit, Your Friends and Neighbors captures how man uses his “white collar” skills to pull off criminal activities. Ozark‘s success was also primarily driven by its portrayal of the central family dynamic. Your Friends and Neighbors also takes a similar route and hints at how the main character’s family members might soon get involved in his criminal activities.
Almost no character in Your Friends and Neighbors is rootable in the typical sense. Yet, like Ozark, it finds creative ways to get viewers invested in their stories.
Heading into season 2, Your Friends and Neighbors might also show how the main character’s wife gets actively involved in his criminal endeavors, just like Wendy starts supporting Marty in Ozark season 2.
If Your Friends and Neighbors maintains a taut storyline in its upcoming installments while ensuring it etches its own identity in the crime thriller genre, it could eventually rank right next to Ozark. Hopefully, after season 1’s gripping story setups and the new additions to its cast, the Apple TV show will not disappoint in season 2.
