The Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) announced on Tuesday the acquisition of 49% of the actions of Altán, a company in charge of the shared network of Mexico, with the aim of strengthening its internet expansion strategy in communities with low connectivity.

The decision was approved by the Board of Directors, chaired by the Secretary of Energy, Luz Elena González Escobar, and the general director of the public company, Emilia Esther Calleja Alor.

This operation responds to the resolution issued by the Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT) on January 15, in which the participation of the CFE in Altán was authorized through the so -called ‘Quetzal Project’.

The acquisition will allow the CFE to designate two members in the Altán Board of Directors and strengthen its role in the development of telecommunications infrastructure in Mexico by acquiring 24% of the company’s corporate rights.

“As a result of the session, the Board of Directors approved the Quetzal project, and instructed the CFE administration to carry out the necessary actions, in order to comply with the conditions established by the Federal Telecommunications Institute in Its resolution issued on January 15, 2025, which authorized the concentration operation that was notified, ”the CFE reported in a statement.

Since 2019, the alliance between the two companies has installed 11,383 communication towers, benefiting 82,178 locations where more than 24 million people reside.

The project seeks to close the digital divide in difficult access areas in Mexico, providing internet to communities between 250 and 5,000 inhabitants, where there is no commercial interest by other operators.

“With this project barriers are reduced to the entry into the telecommunications market, it connects to the farthest towns, and it contributes to guarantee the right to connectivity, endorsing the social sense of the CFE,” said the state firm.

With this investment, the CFE adds to efforts in the democratization of telecommunications, aligning with the government’s government strategy Claudia Sheinbaum to guarantee connectivity as a fundamental right.
