The controversial cuts of the Argentine government continue

The Ministry of Women had been created in 2019 during the presidency of Alberto Fernández (2019-2023), with the aim of developing public policies focused on gender equality, the eradication of violence and access to rights for women and diversities. He was dissolved by the current government in December 2023.

Since its assumption, the Milei government promoted a strong fiscal adjustment agenda, state deregulation and elimination of structures considered unnecessary or motivated by “ideologies.”

When Libarona announced the closure of the Ministry of Women, he said that the government “does not disregard” the situations of violence, but that the approach will be done from a new perspective, focused on “the containment from the family nucleus” and in policies “without ideologies imposed.”

However, various social, feminist and human rights organizations warn that these cuts directly affect women of vulnerable populations.

In Argentina, a woman is murdered every 35 hours for gender violence, according to observatory figures now that they see us. Organizations fear that institutional emptying aggravates the situation.
