At least twelve people died and another five were injured in a fire that occurred this Sunday in a rehabilitation center against addictions in the Mexican municipality of San José Itúrbide, in Guanajuato, the Attorney General’s Office of that state reported in its X account.

In total there were 23 people inside the complex when the fire began. Of these, six were unharmed, including three workers.

The identity of the probable head of the fire is still unknown, while the police investigate whether they are among the deceased, the injured or one of the unharmed persons, according to the State Prosecutor’s Office.

The authorities “seek to establish precisely how and why the fire originated. In a preliminary way, it is confirmed that the fire began inside the bedroom, which was closed on the outside as part of the internal regulations of the place,” he added.

According to the Prosecutor’s Office, the bodies of the deceased were transferred to the Forensic Medical Service, where necropsy are practiced according to the legal, forensic and human rights protocols, and with the decent and respectful treatment that this unfortunate tragedy demands.

The governor of Guanajuato, Libya Dennise García Muñoz Ledo, confirmed that the fire was generated inside the building, and expressed her solidarity with the families of the victims, according to El Universal.

Experts and investigating agents of the State Attorney General’s Office processed the scene and lifted the bodies of the victims, including those of several young people in the process of rehabilitation, to the Forensic Medical Service.

In a statement on which El Universal reports, the municipal government of San José Iturbide expressed its solidarity with the families of the twelve people who died while they were treated to overcome their drug addiction.
