Authorities prepare against Hurricane Erick to Guerrero and Oaxaca

Panic purchases, minor vessel protection, gasoline supply, bottled water and food, this is how Acapulco are prepared before the arrival of Hurricane Erick, forecast for midnight from Wednesday from Wednesday to Thursday.

The authorities warned that the meteorological phenomenon, which this morning intensified category 1 on the Saffir-Simpson scale, could touch land between the states of Oaxaca and Guerrero, so the alert system is in yellow, that is, moderate danger.

“Erick could evolve to Hurricane of category 2. approximately in the first minutes of tomorrow, Thursday, June 19 and according to the forecasts of the National Meteorological Service (SMN) could be entering the Earth between Oaxaca and Guerrero during the day tomorrow,” said Laura Velázquez, National Civil Protection Coordinator, during the presidential press conference.

He also pointed out that sustained winds are foreseen from 100 to 120 kilometers per hour with gusts of 130 to 150 kilometers per hour in the area.

Unlike what happened with the past hurricanes, Otis and John, Civil Protection authorities of Guerrero and the different municipalities began an intense campaign of notices since Tuesday.

Acapulco, with about one million inhabitants and one of the main tourist destinations of the Mexican Pacific, declared the suspension of classes before the arrival of the hurricane.

The officials are alerting all citizenship to be any danger or the need to evacuate their homes, they were voluntarily, whether it was a family member or a temporary refuge.

In the case of federal authorities, the Secretariat of the Marina-Armada of Mexico, activated the Marine Plan with 9,000 agents for the Southern State of Oaxaca and Guerrero while the Secretariat of Defense and the National Guard has activated the DNIII-E Plan, which will be allocated at least 850 troops for the Costa Chica.

For his part, the nautical services provider in Acapulco, Arturo Pantoja Guatemala, said that the withdrawal of minor and boat boats was due to safeguard them and that they do not lose their equipment and tool of works.

Also, federal and state security authorities guaranteed patrols and the protection of the establishments to avoid any possible looting.

Mexico foresees the possible formation of up to 37 cyclones with name in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans in this season, of which five could impact the country.

In 2024, the Mexican Pacific suffered the blow of Hurricane John, who touched land in September as category 3 and left 29 fatal victims in the states of Guerrero, Oaxaca and Michoacán.
