To support Southeast Water’s massive rollout, Avnet (NASDAQ:) has established a water meter test lab for verification testing at its Bayswater facility in Melbourne.

MELBOURNE, Australia–( BUSINESS WIRE )–Avnet (Nasdaq: AVT ), a leading global technology solutions company, has signed an agreement to supply Huizhong’s SCL61H-100 smart ultrasonic water meters to Southeast Water’s Digital Water Meter program.

South East Water is the largest distributor of smart meters in Australia. The deployment of Huizhong’s smart water meters coincides with the water utility’s goal of significantly reducing water wastage, as non-revenue water “water lost through leaks and bursts in distribution systems” represents a significant operating cost for water utilities. environmental problem.

South East Water pioneered the integration of sensors into smart meters. Incorporating a special vibration sensor developed and patented by South East Water, these smart meters will facilitate accurate network leak detection. When the data is fed into South East Water’s Lent IoT platform, the vibration strength is triangulated, thereby pinpointing the exact location of leaks in the network, the type of leak and whether it has potentially turned into an explosion. This helps South East Water reduce non-revenue water, reduce operating costs and ultimately provide cost savings to consumers.

“This partnership perfectly embodies our commitment to sustainability,” said Aik Hoon, regional president of South Asia, Korea and Avnet United.

In partnership with South East Water and Huizhong, we are not only developing advanced technology, but also taking meaningful steps to reduce water wastage and improve resource management. It is very rewarding to see our efforts contribute to a more sustainable and resilient future for the communities we serve, said Aik Hoon.

South East Water General Manager, Digital Utility, Mark Elvins, said following a rigorous tender process, the organization was delighted to realize the cost savings and sustainability benefits that digital water meters would provide for customers, the community and the environment.

We are happy to cooperate with Avnet. As we look to the future, we must build resilience in Australia’s water network to continue to meet the challenges of water scarcity, a changing climate and a growing population, Mr Elvins said.

To support South East Water’s mass rollout, Avnet has established a dedicated water meter testing laboratory for comprehensive verification testing at its Bayswater facility in Melbourne. These advanced meters will provide real-time information on water usage to consumers for improved management and conservation.

South East Water’s customer leak notifications have saved customers an estimated 683 million liters and $2.9 million (over 2023“24) by identifying potential leaks at customer properties in near real time. A network leakage monitoring program using digital meter data has saved more than 140 million liters of potable water through the early detection and repair of water leaks in the South East Water network.

Over the years, Avnet has been instrumental in providing South East Water with advanced solutions for smart water meters and remote telemetry testing, as well as solving the technical challenges of integrating new technologies.

Avnet’s comprehensive support covers every step of the product lifecycle, from design to delivery, with deep technical and supply chain expertise. This collaboration with South East Water is a significant step in Avnet’s journey in the smart water meter sector. It aligns with the company’s broader Internet of Things (IoT) strategy and advances efforts to create a fully connected and sustainable world.
