Bandai Namco has just revealed a new RPG based on Sword Art Online, the massively popular multimedia franchise that takes place in a virtual reality MMORPG. While SAO started as a light novel series, it expanded to become a popular anime series with a long succession of tie-in games. The most recent title, Sword Art Online: Fractured Daydream, was an anniversary celebration game that focused on co-op raid battles.
Echoes of Aincrad, unveiled in a trailer on the official Bandai Namco YouTube channel, is set to be the next Sword Art Online game. The trailer highlights a threat to the world of Aincrad and a chance to take on the personal role of a hero in that setting. Echoes of Aincrad will release on July 10, 2026, with pre-orders starting now.
Echoes Of Aincrad Is A New Sword Art Online Game
With A Twist This Time
While the market for Sword Art Online games has already been thoroughly saturated, the focus on character creation might be what sets Echoes of Aincrad apart. Despite its high stakes, the escapist aspect of SAO has always been a major hook, and getting to step into its world with a custom character fulfills that wish more directly. Of course, some familiar faces also appear, just not in the role of playable protagonists.
The pre-order and edition bonuses for Echoes of Aincrad lean into this even further. Pre-orders come with a weapon pack, while the Ultimate Pack adds a couple of armor sets. Standard, Deluxe, Ultimate, and Aincrad editions are available for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
Bandai Namco Hits All The RPG Staples
You Kind Of Know What To Expect
The trailer doesn’t go into too much depth about what to expect in Echoes of Aincrad, but the official Bandai Namco website offers a little more of a look at the game. Echoes of Aincrad promises customization for “appearance, gear, and combat style,” along with an emphasis on strategizing and synergizing with an AI partner.
For those less interested in builds, Echoes of Aincrad should still have some typical RPG pleasures. Some wide vistas highlight the typical focus on exploration, complete with “perilous dungeons filled with secrets.” Like other Sword Art Online games and most Bandai Namco RPGs, there’s a healthy mix of anime cel-shading and more realistic environmental detail.
I never got into Sword Art Online, but it’s an undeniable juggernaut, so it’s not surprising to see another related RPG venture from Bandai Namco. If you were hoping the new RPG reveal would be another Tales game or a new IP, unfortunately, you’ll have to keep waiting for now.
