Mexico City, (EFE) .- Banks operating in Mexico registered net benefits for 126,367 million pesos in the first five months of 2025, an annual real increase of 2.08%, according to data from the National Banking and Securities Commission (CNBV).

In this way, the profits of the banking system as a whole maintained the positive pace thanks to the growth in interest and commissions (2.76%) and consumer credit (9.2%).

Of the total profits of the 52 financial entities with operation in the country, more than 78% were concentrated on the seven banks considered of systemic importance —BBVA, Citibanamex, Banorte, Santander, HSBC, Scotiabank and Inbursa – known as the ‘G7’.

These entities accumulated benefits for 95,418 million pesos, although with an annual real drop of 4.65%.

The decrease in the profits of the G7 is explained by higher interest expenses, which added 284.611 million pesos and a decline in the commercial credit of 10.09%.

Expanding credit and stable delinquency

The total credit portfolio of the banking system reached 7.83 billion pesos during the period, with an annual real growth of 6.51%.

It highlights the progress of consumer credit (9.2%) and business credit (6.51%), while housing financing increased only 2.12%.

Regarding the quality of the portfolio, the total delinquency index (IMOR) was 2.08%, with a marginal variation of 0.04 percentage points compared to the same period of the previous year.

The index remains at historically low levels, which shows an environment of relative credit stability, according to the Association of Banks of Mexico (ABM).

In a recent press conference, the president of the ABM, Emilio Romano, assured that the bank is solid, well capitalized, with a capitalization index close to 20%, and lends above the growth rate of GDP, which demonstrates its role as the engine of the economy, in the middle of an environment of deceleration and commercial tensions.

Romano recalled that private credit continues to grow in double digit in nominal terms and that a credit penetration is expected over GDP of more than 37 % this year.
