(Reuters) Banorte does not consider making an offer for Banamex, said its general director, Marcos Ramírez, to the Millennium newspaper in an interview published Monday.

Ramírez’s comments were distanced from the statements he made during the most recent Banorte Results Conference last month, where he suggested that Banorte could be considering possible purchase opportunities.

Ramírez told Millennium that those comments were misunderstood.

“We were interested a few years ago, but we put each other back (…) we did not participate in the new process,” Ramírez said.

“We will continue to monitor what happens with this (Banamex) and any other,” he added.

Ramírez had told analysts last month that Banorte was closely following Banamex’s movements and that “would propose” from there.
Banorte launched an offer to acquire Banamex in 2022, but finally withdrew, a decision that analysts saw with good eyes at that time.

Citi was close to selling his Banamex unit to the Mining conglomerate Grupo México for 7 billion dollars, although the tensions between the group and then President Andrés Manuel López Obrador led to the agreement failing.

Citi now plans to list Banamex, which could be a possible dual price in Mexico City and New York.
