Have you arrived messages about alleged problems with the delivery of parcels or shipments? Be careful because you could be a victim of fraud.

Phishing is a technique with which criminals send messages or mails to pass by recognized entities to deceive users and obtain sensitive information.

The messages incite the concern of customers when receiving texts such as “Your account will be suspended”, “Last opportunity to confirm your information” or “Action required immediately”, thus convincing the user to place their information.

In general, they seek to challenge people with quite persuasive mail affairs of the type: “Your package is retained”, “Missing information for delivery” and “Delivery of the suspended package,” says Camilo Gutiérrez Amaya, head of the Research Laboratory of the Signature of Cybersecurity Eset Latin America, according to a statement.

Given this problem, Fedex, for example, warns its clients that if they receive this type of communications they do not respond or cooperate with the sender.

ESET gives a list of tips to identify malicious emails and avoid fraud:

  • Stop to think if a shipment is really waiting. If the answer is “no” it is a fraud.
  • Check if the sender is legitimate. Generally, these types of scams have a sender that clearly differs from the legitimate way, so it is always a good first step to put the eye there.
  • Be alarmed if there is a request for sensitive information is personal or banking. This should turn on the alarms.
  • Check where the link that is included in the mail is directed: it is always important to verify if it leads to the official site.
  • Observe if it presents spelling or writing errors, although artificial intelligence has significantly improved this type of emails.

ESET points out key points to reduce the risk of falling into scams:

  • Pay special attention and distrust those communications that arrive unexpectedly and with a very marked sense of urgency. Do not click or download attachments.
  • Communicate through the official channels of the messaging and parcel service, on the veracity of the mail received and the supposed package in question.
  • Always verify to the page that is entered to provide personal data: it must be safe and the URL corresponds to the Real.
