To sell his Centre Island home, Billy Joel goes to extremes.
The legendary singer re-listed his home in the Oyster Bay hamlet for $29.9 million, the New York Post reported. That’s a $20 million drop from what Joel was seeking for the compound, known as MiddleSea, in 2023.
While price drops aren’t uncommon for luxury homes languishing on the market, Joel has also downsized the offering as part of the price slash. In addition to cutting the price, the beloved singer cut what is actually available, subdividing the property and trying to sell it off piecemeal.
What was once a 26-acre waterfront compound is being marketed as a still sizable 14-acre main residence. The gross price hasn’t changed, according to Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Laffey International Realty’s Emmett Laffey.
Two separate three-acre lots are being offered for $5 million apiece. The estate’s gatehouse, meanwhile, just sold to a North Shore couple for a cool $7 million.
Laffey claimed several fans of the legendary singer — who just announced a battle against a brain disorder that is forcing him off the stage — have already put out offers for the main residence. If sold at ask, the 20,000-square-foot home would be sold for $1,495 per square foot.
The residence includes five bedrooms, eight bathrooms and 180-degree views of the Long Island Sound. There’s also a spa, a ballroom, a wine cellar and a guest house with a bowling alley. The grounds feature a beach house, pool, private dock, tennis court, six-car garage and a true luxury finish, a helipad.
Joel purchased the property in 2002 for $22.5 million. Amid lengthy renovations on the estate, Joel started living in the gatehouse and never moved back into the main home.
Even if Joel leaves Oyster Bay, he’s not poised to leave Long Island; in late 2023, he quietly spent $10.7 million to purchase 143 Town Lane in East Hampton.
