Vienna waits for you, but savvy luxury homebuyers realized that they should wait out the initial ask on Billy Joel’s Centre Island home.
The legendary crooner knocked $5 million off the listing at 502 Centre Island Road on Long Island, Newsday reported. Listed for $29.9 million in May, the massive home in the Oyster Bay hamlet can instead be had for $25 million today, or $1,250 per square foot.
Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Laffey International Realty chief executive officer Emmett Laffey referred to the price cut as a “slight adjustment,” though it dropped a sixth off the listing.
Part of the former MiddleSea compound had already been slashed, literally. In May, a North Shore couple purchased the five-bedroom, four-bathroom gatehouse for $7 million.
But there’s still plenty to be had on the 14-acre estate. The 20,000-square-foot home includes five bedrooms, eight bathrooms and 180-degree views of the Long Island Sound. The property also has a spa, a ballroom, a wine cellar and a guest house with a bowling alley.
The grounds aren’t too shabby either, complete with a beach house, pool, private dock, tennis court, six-car garage and a helipad.
Joel purchased the property for $22.5 million in 2002. During lengthy renovations on the estate, Joel moved out to the gatehouse and never returned to living in the main home.
Should Joel leave Oyster Bay, the Hicksville-born artist has another place to go on Long Island: in late 2023, he spent $10.7 million to purchase 143 Town Lane in East Hampton.
Last October, meanwhile, Joel sold his oceanfront Manalapan mansion for $42.6 million, after listing the estate on and off for six years. He also just sold a two-bedroom condo on Elizabeth Street in Manhattan for $4.5 million to his daughter, Alexa Joel, according to Realtor.com.
An HBO documentary on Joel aired over the summer, but he’s paused his live performances while battling a brain disorder.
