The Foreign Minister of Brazil, Mauro Vieira, said Wednesday that the judiciary of his country “will not be curved before external pressures” and that his government “reserves the right to respond” to US sanctions against a magistrate of the Supreme Court.
Vieira declared before the media that he met with his American counterpart, Marco Rubio, in Washington and that during the meeting he defended the “independence” of the Judiciary, after the decision of the Government of Donald Trump to apply new sanctions to Judge Alexandre de Moraes.
Likewise, the Foreign Minister said that both officials agreed on “the need to maintain dialogue” to “resolve” the bilateral crisis.
Vieira said she plans to return to Brazil this Wednesday and will inform President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva about the results of conversations with US officials and then “define” an answer.

The meeting between the two foreign ministers is the meeting in person of highest level between representatives of both countries since the tensions climb for Trump’s attacks to the Judicial Power of Brazil.
According to the Trump government, Moraes, who had already been forbidden to enter American territory, violates human rights with their orders to withdraw publications in social networks with antidemocratic messages.
In addition, the North American leader accuses him of “persecuting” the Brazilian ex -president Jair Bolsonaro, an ally of his who is being tried for trying to give a coup to stay in power after the electoral defeat of 2022.
Trump has also used these arguments to justify the imposition of a 50 % tariff on a part of Brazilian imports.
The Supreme Court of Brazil, meanwhile, highlighted in a statement that there are “serious signs” against Bolsonaro, whom it guaranteed a “just trial.”
