Thirteen years after the demolition of the Nelson Piquet Autodrome, which housed the Formula One Brazil Grand Prix until 1989, Rio de Janeiro will begin to build a new and modern circuit next year in which he hopes to receive the maximum test of motor racing again, and other competitions.

The Guaratiba Park Autodrome will be erect by a private consortium in an area of 4.7 square kilometers, in a field outside this Brazilian city, of which the track will occupy 2% and the remaining 98% will constitute a park with its own environmental reserve.

The start of the works is scheduled for the first semester of 2026, depending on the issuance of the environmental license, and will last for two or three years, said a rock spokesperson World, the company responsible for the development of the project.

The new autodrome seeks to replace river on the international map of motor racing and create a large entertainment pole in Guaratiba, a neighborhood located 55 kilometers from the center of Rio, said Rock World, the same company responsible for the famous Rock In Rio Music Festival.

The construction consortium ensures that he still studies to determine the cost of the autodrome.

Details of the project

To make the project viable, the Mayor’s Office created an innovative tool with which to raise resources and will allow Rock World Sell installments to companies interested in obtaining licenses for other projects, in more valued areas.

Buyers of these quotas will be entitled, and the respective license, to erect more floors than those allowed by legislation in neighborhoods with greater real estate interest.

Rock World expects to capture with this instrument about 500 million reais (about 95 million dollars or 80 million euros), but the autodrome project “will require much more than that”, so the company will look for other investors and resort to banks financing, according to the company spokesperson.

The development and construction of the Autodrome will be in charge of the American Populous firm, which counts in a portfolio of works the Sphere de Las Vegas, the Yankee Stadium in New York, the Tottenham Stadium in London and the British Silverstone circuit.

The Consortium also includes Driven International, world leader in Alancovilismo Circuits Design and responsible for tracks such as Mandalika (Indonesia) and Navarra (Spain).

The Populous Preliminary Project, presented in August, foresees the construction of a 4.71 kilometers in which different circuit configurations can be adapted depending on the needs of each modality.

In the Formula One competition circuit, with four long straight, it is estimated that cars can reach an average speed of up to 241 kilometers per hour.

The layout will be “innovative and challenging” and “promises to attract both pilots and fans,” Populous said in a statement.

The project also foresees the construction of stands and facilities with capacity for 150,000 spectators, a complex for Kart competitions and a private club.

And throughout the environment, a park open to the population with green areas, attractions, courts, bike lane and a permanent environmental preservation area that includes a mangrove of 43,000 square meters.

The consortium also promised to develop fully sustainable infrastructure, including a solar energy park and a water collection and recycling system, and to plant native species throughout the park.
