The Government of Mexico City will propose to the local Congress that electric motorcycles whose speed is greater than 25 kilometers per hour must carry a plate, circulation card, helmet and go with the lights on, rules that apply for internal combustion motorcycles.

In addition, these vehicles may not circulate per bike paths or confined lanes, and they cannot move on sidewalks or in any other confined area.

The objective is to take care of the users of these transports, guarantee safe mobility, put order in traffic and protect the environment, argued the head of government, Clara Brugada, announcing on Tuesday the proposals to reform the Mobility Law and the Transit Regulation.

In the case of circulation permits issued by other federative entities, they must register before the Mobility Secretariat of Mexico City to guarantee greater control.

The Government also proposed that the one that uses human traction, assisted pedaling or has an electric motor with a maximum speed of 25 kilometers per hour is considered as non -motorized vehicle.

These units have preference on motorized and must advance where there are cyclevías and indicate their lane changes by signals. In case of being in streets where there is no cycling infrastructure, the right lane can be used.

In the third quarter of 2024 traffic accidents in Mexico City dropped 10.6% compared to the period prior to 19,207, the capital government said.

In that period 106 deaths were recorded by traffic accident, of which 49% were motorcycle users. That figure puts the users of that transport in the lead, compared to others, such as cyclists, drivers, passengers or pedestrians, he explained.

Brugada said that in terms of traffic accident injuries, motorcyclists also lead the figure with 43%.

He indicated that in the capital there are 750,722 internal combustion motorcycles, but the electric motorcycles have also increased, which have had a great boom in some areas of the city, so that with the modifications to the law it is sought to guarantee road safety, the order in transit and the protection of the environment.
