The Mexican Chamber of the Construction Industry (CMIC) warned that public investment in infrastructure is insufficient and must be doubled, in a context of 14 months of consecutive falls in the sector and in the face of the challenges that will be imposed by the World Cup 2026 in Mexico, the United States and Canada.

The president of the CMIC, Luis Méndez Jaled, explained at a press conference that while investment in public works remains around 2.5% of GDP, it would be necessary to raise it to at least 4% to meet the needs of the country.

“We have said it, practically double.

The sector leader considered that a billion pesos would be a good amount for infrastructure, in the face of the presentation of the economic package by 2026, although he admitted that it is known that “it will not be so.”

“It is very complicated by commitments, unrecoverable expenses, for the commitments of social programs, for tax issues,” he said.

In this regard, he recalled that in countries in the region, such as Chile and Colombia, the impulse to infrastructure has been linked to long -encouragement investment plans.

The leader of the builders stressed that the insufficiency of resources is reflected in a sector that accumulates 14 months of setbacks, with estimated losses of between 8% and 12%.

This performance has resulted in a decrease in employment in an industry that contributes 7% of national GDP and generates around 4.7 million jobs, he warned.

World Cup 2026, an opportunity

The CMIC stressed that the 2026 World Cup represents an opportunity to detonate projects, but also a capital challenge for the lack of preparation in urban infrastructure.

Among the main risks mentioned the sewer deficit, the need to modernize mobility and deficiencies in tourist infrastructure at the participating headquarters, including Mexico City, Jalisco and Nuevo León.

“We know that the World Cup detonates many things, but today Mexico City and other cities have a very important deficit,” he said, while estimating that the biggest challenge is to guarantee efficient mobility and appropriate urban services in less than a year.

In addition, Méndez Jaled revealed that the sector will have meetings with the governors of the headquarters of the Jalisco and Nuevo León Cup, as well as the head of government of the CDMX.

He also explained that the Chamber organizes a Congress on tourist infrastructure to coordinate efforts with state authorities.

Use of technologies

Along with the resources, the CMIC stressed the importance of using artificial technology and intelligence in project planning, as Méndez Jaled said that digital platforms and analysis tools allow to guarantee transparency, traceability and efficiency, reducing cost overruns and delays that have historically affected public works.

The Chamber reiterated its willingness to collaborate with the Government to define investment mechanisms that combine public and private resources, under a framework of legal certainty and use of new technologies.
