With changes to the law to prevent trafficking, the costs of private security services rose between 25% and 30%, according to Daniel Espinoza, president of the Mexican Association of Private Security Companies (AMESP).

The greatest cost, he said in an interview, arises after the reform of the General Law to Prevent, Punish and Eradicate Crimes in the Matter of Human Trafficking, which now prevents security guards from working long hours, as was usual.

“Now they must work without exceeding 48 hours a week,” he explained.

Before, surveillance personnel could be in their position longer, but the changes now require more personnel and greater investment because the solution has been to resort to technology, he explained.

The technological tools that will mainly be implemented are video surveillance cameras and GPS surveillance tools, he explained.

On June 7, 2024, the reform to the Law to prevent trafficking was published in the Official Gazette. In article 21 an addition was made to limit working hours, as well as overtime hours to a maximum of 3 per day and 9 per week.

The sanctions for companies whose hours exceed what is established by the Federal Labor Law are 3 to 10 years in prison and a fine of 5,000 to 50,000 days.
