Former President Felipe Calderón assured that he never had verifiable evidence against his Secretary of Public Security, Genaro García Luna, who received a prison sentence in the United States this Wednesday of just over 38 years.
García Luna was convicted of drug trafficking and organized crime, and for having benefited from millions of dollars paid by the Sinaloa Cartel.
Felipe Calderón reaffirmed that despite the criticism he would make the decision again to confront organized crime during his six-year term.
“It was one of the most difficult decisions of my life, but I would do it again because it is the right thing to do,” he wrote on the social network X.
In his statement, the former president emphasized that during his administration he never received information from intelligence agencies, both Mexican and foreign, that involved Genaro García Luna in illegal activities.

“I never had verifiable evidence that involved him with illicit activities, nor did I receive information in that sense from intelligence agencies, Mexican or foreign, which then trusted him and interacted with him,” he said.
Felipe Calderón also pointed out that, although he has not had access to the evidence presented in the trial, he respects the decision of the US court, and reiterated that whoever breaks the law must assume the consequences of their actions.
Furthermore, the former president defended his security policy by arguing that the fight against organized crime was not the responsibility of a single person, but of an entire government team.
Despite the mistakes that could have been made, he insisted that his administration pushed crime back, and that Mexico’s true enemy continues to be organized crime.
In his message, he also called for national unity, suggesting that internal division favors criminal groups: “A divided country can be defeated. “A united country can fight and prevail.”

“The new government has the opportunity to act effectively in defense of Mexican families. It can strengthen what has been done well, and correct what needs to be corrected, both from my government and from those who succeeded me. Hopefully I can call for a true State Policy on security and justice that, beyond political polarization, joins everyone’s efforts to defeat the true enemy of Mexico,” concluded Calderón.
