California requested a Federal Court on Tuesday to issue an emergency order to block the deployment in Los Angeles de Soldados de la Guardia Nacional and the US Marine Infantry ordered by the administration of President Donald Trump, due to protests against migratory raids.
The governor of California, Gavin Newsom, informed that, together with the state attorney general Rob Bonta, he submitted an emergency application before the Court of the Northern District of California requesting an order that prevents the Pentagon from expanding the current mission of the federalized staff of the National Guard of California and the Marine Infantry.
Trump ordered 2,000 soldiers of the California National Guard last Saturday, without counting on the governor’s authorization, which is the first time in 60 years that the US Executive does not know the state authority on the forces.
Newsom and Bonta sued the White House on Monday to stop the deployment arguing that the administration “abused the authority of the federal government and violated the tenth amendment” of the Constitution.
But Trump and the Pentagon responded on Monday with the shipment of 700 marine infants and 2,000 more soldiers of the California National Guard.
“Sending trained fighters to the streets is not preceded and threatens the very essence of our democracy,” Newsom said Tuesday in a statement.
“Trump is behaving like a tyrant, not as a president. We ask the Court to immediately block these illegal actions,” the Democrat deepened.
The emergency request asks the Court to issue this Tuesday the locking order, day on which the deployment of more soldiers in Los Angeles is expected, after several days of focused demonstrations, which have resulted in acts of vandalism controlled by the city police.
The judicial request warns that without a “rapid” measure, the deployment of the troops intensifies the tensions and promotes (instead of suffocating) social discomfort, “Bonta said before Judge Charles Breyer in the United States District Court in San Francisco.
The demonstrations in Los Angeles began on Friday after the Immigration and Customs Control Service (ICE) carried out a series of operations against workers and have prolonged for four days.
Newsom said that although some violent and illegal incidents were reported, which led to “justified” arrests by state and local authorities, “these protests were largely peaceful” and involved citizens who exercised their right to protest, protected by the first amendment.
The governor, like the mayor of Los Angeles, Karen Bass, have stressed that the police have managed to control the situation, as in other cases recent of disturbances.
The total deployment of the almost 5,000 soldiers will cost 134 million dollars that will cover transport, food, accommodation and other expenses up to a maximum of 60 days, according to figures shared by the Pentagon.
