The Canadian authorities announced this Friday that they have decided to suspend the tender for the supply of trains of the expansion of the Toronto Metro and grant the contract to the French company Alstom “before the US tariffs”.

In a joint statement, the governments of Canada, the province of Ontario and the city of Toronto, indicated that they will negotiate directly with ALSTOM the initial purchase of 70 trains of six cars each for line 2 of the Metro.

“In a context of American tariffs and economic uncertainty, the measure seeks to support Canadian workers,” said the authorities of the northern country who added that “the ongoing tender to award the contract has been canceled and all bidders have been notified.”

The contract, which will be negotiated in the coming months, includes options to buy more trains.

A total of 55 trains will be allocated to replace the units that currently operate on line 2 of the Metro and the remaining 15 for two extensions of Yonge North and Scarborough, which are in the process of construction.

Alstom bought the Division of Railroads of the Canadian Bombardier in 2021. At present, the French company has factories of rail material in the Canadian towns of Brampton, Kingston and Thunder Bay.

The construction of the Scarborough extension has been awarded to a consortium formed by FCC Canada (FCC Construction Subsidiary) and AECON and has a budget of about 4,000 million euros.

The Spanish company Sener has been selected as the main designer of the stations and systems of this extension, which will have a length of 7.8 kilometers and will have three underground stations that will work as modal exchangers.

Toronto foresees that the extension of Scarborough, one of the most populated neighborhoods in the city, be used by around 100,000 travelers a day.
