Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, said Thursday that Canada will “fight” against tariffs imposed by Donald Trump’s administration against the automobile sector and that will adopt commercial reprisals that will have a “maximum impact” in the United States.
Carney also revealed that on Wednesday night, the US president contacted him to maintain a conversation and that he will take advantage of the dialogue to point out that the only way is “cooperation and mutual respect.”
The Canadian leader specified, at a press conference after gathering in Ottawa with his cabinet to discuss the tariffs announced on Wednesday, that the conversation with Trump will be held “soon”, in the next 24 or 48 hours.
“I reject any attempt to weaken Canada, to exhaust us, to break us so that the United States becomes our owners. That will never happen. Our response to these tariffs is to fight, protect and build. We will fight tariffs with commercial measures of reprisal that will have the maximum impact on the United States,” he explained.

The Canadian prime minister also said that the United States has ceased to be “a reliable partner” so in the future, Canada will raise a “wide renegotiation” of all its relations with the neighboring country to dramatically cut its dependence.
“We will build an independent future for our country more solid than ever,” he said and added that Canada will have to restructure its economy, which until now depends on the US trade, because the relationship it has maintained for decades “is over.”
“The old relationship we had with the United States based on the deepening of the integration of our economies, security and military cooperation is over. It is not clear how next the EU will do. But what is evident is that Canadians can control our destiny,” he announced.
He also rejected the threat Trump launched on Wednesday night and the European Union (EU) cooperate to combat tariffs.

“We are a sovereign nation. We will make our own decisions,” he said to add later: “We choose our own allies, how we interact with those allies. So I take note of the president’s comment but I don’t follow him as a guideline.”
