Canada’s Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly said Monday that she is working to create a “coalition” with European countries that present a common front to the tariff threat of the president of the United States, Donald Trump.

Joly, who has been touring for more than a week in Europe and Africa, declared in a teleconference with Canadian media from London that “we need to be able to deal with the unpredictability of President Trump.”

“It is important that allies under that threat, work together and work as a coalition with the same types of countermeasures to respond to tariffs,” he continued.

Canadian Foreign Minister added that this is the reason why in the past 10 days she has traveled to Paris, London, Munich and Brussels. The tour, which also included its presence in Johannesburg (South Africa) to participate in the G20 Foreign Ministers meeting, will conclude Tuesday in the British capital.

Joly’s statements occur at the same time that Trump insisted Monday that 25% tariffs on their two main commercial partners, Canada and Mexico, “go forward.”

The levies, which were established in early February, are suspended until March 4.

“The tariffs go forward, as planned,” Trump said in a press conference in Washington.

Canada has warned that tariffs will cause a serious economic crisis in North America, with the destruction of tens of thousands of jobs on both sides of the border.
