Canada will have trade retaliation against the United States ready if Donald Trump imposes tariffs against Canadian exports when he assumes the Presidency on January 20, Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly announced this Friday.
Joly told the media that “the threat (of tariffs) is clear and present.”
“President (elect) Trump has said that he will impose the tariffs immediately,” recalled Joly, who added that Canada is working to try to convince the Republican leader’s advisors that there will be retaliation by the Canadian government if it implements the announced measure.

Joly – Trump relationship
Joly’s job now is to have a series of trade retaliations ready in case Trump finally imposes the tariffs.
“We will be ready. And at the same time we need to take threats of tariffs as a very serious threat,” he continued.
Joly explained that Trump enters his second term as a “more experienced” president.
“He has had time to think about his first term and has gathered a group of people who are very loyal to him. “Now he understands not only how Washington works, but also geopolitics,” he declared.
“We have to show Americans and the people around Trump that there will be real consequences,” the minister emphasized.
