Canada requested consultations with the United States on the WTO dispute for the imposition of tariffs on imports from certain steel and aluminum products from Canada, the commercial agency said Thursday.

Ottawa says that the measures, which end the exemption of Canada of additional rights on some steel and aluminum products and increase the rights over aluminum articles and that entered into force on Wednesday, are incompatible with the United States’s obligations under the General Agreement on Customs and Commerce Tariffs (GATT) of 1994, the WTO said in a statement.

“They have cheated us for years and they will not cheat us anymore. I am not going to give in anything, to aluminum, or to steel, or cars, ”he said.
The measure follows a separate application submitted by Canada on March 5 for consultations with the United States after the new Trump 25% tariffs entered into force to imports from Canada and Mexico, along with new tariffs on Chinese products.
