The Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney, confirmed Tuesday that he will travel to Mexico on September 18 and 19 to meet with the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, and treat commercial relations.
The journey of the Canadian president had been announced on Friday by Sheinbaum, but had not been confirmed by the Canadian government.
The Office of the Prime Minister of Canada pointed out in a statement that Carney’s trip “will deepen the association between Canada and Mexico and strengthen American prosperity.”
The trip will concentrate “in security, infrastructure, investments, energy and commerce,” added the text.
“Canada and Mexico have a strong relationship, built on more than three decades of free trade. Before the changing global panorama, we are focused on raising our associations in commerce, security and energy,” said Carney.
“Together, we will build stronger supply chains, we will create new opportunities and produce greater prosperity and certainty for Canadians and Mexicans,” added the leader of Canada.
The Carbyy to Mexico’s trip occurs while Canada negotiates with the US a new bilateral commercial agreement after the decision of the administration of President Donald Trump to apply tariffs to products not included in the TMEC.
In recent weeks, Canada has strived to rebuild its relations with the Mexican authorities after the statements made at the end of 2024 of the previous prime minister, Justin Trudeau, in which he raised the idea of expelling Mexico from the TMEC to avoid Trump’s tariffs.
Canada, Mexico and the United States have to begin to renegotiate the TMEC in 2026.
