The National Chamber of the Restaurant and Seasoned Foods Industry (Canirac) announced this Tuesday the launch of the English training program “Speak World”, aimed at workers in the hospitality sector with an eye on this year’s Soccer World Cup.

At the presentation of the initiative, organized by the Evaluation Center for Higher Education (Ceneval), it was explained that all hospitality workers will be able to participate in this training course to certify their skills in the English language, and thus “be prepared” for a World Cup event in which nearly five million tourists are expected to come to Mexico.

“I am sure that this will do good for the restaurant industry. We have to always be prepared so that tourists leave with a good taste in their mouths, so that they see that in Mexico we are on par with any country in the world and that we can communicate very easily with all tourism,” highlighted the president of Canirac, Ignacio Alarcón.

In this sense, he valued the hospitality industry as one of the country’s “great economic drivers” thanks to the 2.8 million direct jobs it generates, so the ‘World Talk’ program is a way to be “100% prepared” to serve all visitors, the “majority” of whom are English-speaking.

English program will allow ‘more prepared’ workers

The plan, designed by the Platzi platform and which will conclude with an online evaluation to certify the level of English acquired, is aimed at improving the restaurants’ service to foreign customers, focusing on real situations that hospitality workers may face.

Regardless of the level of English, all workers can participate to improve their skills, as well as the hospitality establishments themselves, who will be recognized with a badge.

According to the general director of Ceneval, Carmen Enedina, this linguistic preparation will allow Mexican talent “to be recognized worldwide.”

According to his calculations, only 10% of the five million in this industry have officially certified knowledge in English, which in his opinion demonstrates the relevance of the training program for the Soccer World Cup.

In addition, the promoters stated that a better level allows workers to be better prepared and more likely to achieve better remuneration for their respective performances.

The World Cup, which is held every four years, will begin next June in the three venues planned for this edition: the United States, Mexico and Canada.

The opening match will be on June 11 at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City.
