Construction equipment manufacturer Caterpillar expanded its presence in Irving, Texas, buying an office building that was once the headquarters for jewelry retailer Zales.
The new Caterpillar site, about three miles from its current headquarters at Williams Square, will provide additional workspace and serve as a venue for hosting dealers, customers and visitors, according to The Dallas Morning News. Financial details of the sale were not disclosed, but Dallas Central Appraisal District records value the 15‑acre property at 901 West Walnut Hill Lane at $51.5 million, although tax valuations often lag behind market prices.
Coppell‑based office maker Vari sold the property, formerly called VariSpace Las Colinas, after acquiring it in 2019. Originally built in 1982 as the headquarters for Zales, the complex includes three office buildings totaling more than 400,000 square feet, along with a four‑level parking garage. At its peak, the site accommodated nearly 3,000 employees. Zales is now part of Signet Jewelers based in Akron, Ohio.
On its website, VariSpace calls the Las Colinas property a “fully furnished turnkey office space” with an onsite 7,000-square-foot cafe and lobby coffee bar, a conference and training center, a Wi-Fi enabled park and a 10,000-square-foot fitness center. Two recent leases at the property include a MUFG Bank renewal and the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences.
Caterpillar relocated its global headquarters from Deerfield, Illinois, to the Dallas–Fort Worth market in 2022. The company currently employs more than 800 people at Williams Square and about 6,600 statewide. Caterpillar has maintained a presence in Texas since the 1960s.
Last year the company added about 50,000 square feet to its Williams Square space.
With reported revenue of $64.8 billion in 2024, Caterpillar is the world’s leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, off‑highway diesel and natural gas engines, industrial gas turbines, and diesel‑electric locomotives.
