The closure of the first semester was historic for the production of light cars in Mexico, as it had its best June and its best first half of the year since there is registration, but the industry asks for caution due to the Trump factor.

In addition, in the accumulated between January and June, production added 2 million 6,720 units, which implied an increase of 0.5% at an annual rate.

However, the general director of the Mexican Association of the Automotive Industry (AMIA), Odracir Barquera, stressed that it is necessary to have caution because the tariff movements of the US President.

He added that 2024 marked a historical record of production and export in light vehicles, so the comparison base is very high.

“Taking these two factors into account, and the fact of this very particular situation in which we are in this year, both production and export behavior is less unstable than what could have been planned,” he said.

“While we have had difficult months, especially January, February and April and May, right now we had this recovery and (…) we must be cautious because the second semester still is missing,” he added.

He said that there are still many of the conditions in which the US tariff policy will end with the rest of the world and that is why we must go with some caution.

“We are in the best first semester of the year since you have a record, but we must not advance much. I think we must expect how the agreements are given by the United States with the rest of the countries,” he said.

The industry also reported that exports in June grew 14% annual to 331,517 units, while in the accumulated of the first six months there was a 2.8% drop to one million 66,184 units.

AMIA explained that it is the most solid June in exports since you have registration.
