Mexico City.- The expansion of the informal economy has been promoted by institutional weakness and impunity, said the National Chamber of Commerce, Services and Tourism of Mexico City (Canaco CDMX).
The organization assured that there are no official actions that slow down and reverse informality, a source of income for criminal organizations.
Informality in the country’s economic units grew between 2018 and 2023, during the sexennium of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, according to data from the 2024 economic censuses published Thursday by the INEGI.
In 2023, 3 million 515,926 units were registered in informality conditions, a 64.3% participation that exceeds 62.6% reported five years ago.
“Allow the growth of informality is equivalent to accepting a development model characterized by low productivity, absence of labor contracts, lack of access to social security and, above all, the production and commercialization of goods and services that breach the rules that govern the economy

He said that in the last six -year term, organized crime was allowed to grow and that “something similar could happen with informal activity if they continue to proliferate it, it will be very difficult to fight it in the future.”

Gutiérrez Camposeco explained that informal activities are linked to products of unknown origin, without quality controls or guarantees for the consumer, which weakens the foundations of the formal sector and generates unfair competition, in addition to negative impacts in the fiscal, social and productive fields.
